Begin in Bangkok before travelling to the former capital Ayutthaya to visit the magnificent ruins of this once splendid city. Admire the fi nest example of Khmer architecture outside Cambodia at Prasat Hin Phanom Rung, with its numerous exquisite carvings. Explore Ban Chiang Archaeological Site, considered to be the most important archaeological sites in southeast Asia, to learn more about this pre-historic civilisation. In Phu Phra Bat National Park view the unusual rock formations, many of which have been used as canvases for pre-historic art or carved into religious shrines. End the tour by exploring the archaeological site of Non Mueang Ancient Town before returning to Bangkok.
This tour allows you to wind through Thailand’s northeastern regions, going off the beaten track to visit traditional sites where time-honoured customs are preserved as a part of daily life.
Tour itinerary
DAY 1: AUSTRALIA TO BANGKOK
Fly with QANTAS Airways to Bangkok for an overnight stay.
DAY 2: BANGKOK TO NAKHON RATCHASIMA
This morning drive to the former capital of Thailand, Ayutthaya. Admire the magnificent ruins of early splendour that Ayutthaya is famous for all over the world. Proceed to Nakhon Ratchasima, stopping en route at Phimai Historical Park, Phimai National Museum and Sai Ngam.
DAY 3: NAKHON RATCHASIMA TO SURIN
Travel to Surin, stopping en route to visit Prasat Hin Phanom Rung in Buri Ram, the most famous Khmer ruin outside of Cambodia. Continue to the majestic Phanom Sawai Forest Park. End the day with a shopping visit at a Silver Ware and Thai Silk Village.
DAY 4: SURIN
Travel to the Elephant Camp at Tha Tum Elephant Village, before continuing on to the Monument of Phraya Surin Phakdi Si Narong Changwang. Later visit Wat Burapharam temple to view Luang Pho Phra Chi, a sacred Buddha image.
DAY 5: SURIN TO KHONG CHIAM
Drive to Ubon Ratchathani and visit a local market. After lunch, enjoy a boat ride along the Mekong River before continuing to Khong Chiam for a two night stay.
DAY 6: KHONG CHIAM
Visit the bustling local market at Chong Meck, located on the Laos border. Continue to Pha Taem Historical Park to view the beautiful scenery and ancient murals. Head back to Khong Chiam where you will enjoy the afternoon free at your leisure.
DAY 7: KHONG CHIAM TO MUKDAHAN
Transfer to Mukdahan, a city dating back to the Ayutthaya period. Stop en route at the Phu Pha Thoep National Park, where you can view the Phu Phan Mountain Range. Later visit the Mukdahan Tower and Wat Song Khon, the largest and most beautiful Catholic church in southeast Asia.
DAY 8: MUKDAHAN TO UDON THANI
Continue to Udon Thani Province. Stop en route at the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site, considered the most important prehistoric settlement so far discovered in southeast Asia.
DAY 9: UDON THANI
Enjoy the morning free at your leisure before visiting the Udon Sunshine Orchid Farm, famous for a variety of orchids. A new species of fragrant Thai orchid has been created here.
DAY 10: UDON THANI TO NONG KHAI
Drive to Nong Khai, stopping en route to view the most visited temple in Thailand, Wat Pho Chai. View Luangpho Phra Sai, a sacred Buddha image of the town which is housed here. Visit Phrathat Nong Khai, a broken pagoda in the middle of the Mekong River. Continue to Sala Kaeo Ku, an open museum of religious statues which was created around 1978. Later this afternoon stop at the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge, which opened in 1994.
DAY 11: NONG KHAI TO LOEI
This morning drive to Loei, an eco-tourism city surrounded by undulating mountain ranges whose summits are covered by fog and abundant with fl ora. On the way we visit Phu Phra Bat Historical Park to view the unusual rock formations.
DAY 12: LOEI TO KHON KAEN
Travel to Khon Kaen, where we visit the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum to view excavation sites and fossils found in the area.
DAY 13: KHON KAEN TO BANGKOK
Leave Khon Kaen and travel back to Bangkok, visiting the Non Mueang Ancient Town en route. A must for anyone who is interested in archaeology, this site has been inhabited since the late pre-historic era. Explore the area and view the many fascinating artefacts found here.
DAY 14: DEPART BANGKOK
This morning is free at your leisure before you are transferred to Bangkok airport to board your overnight fl ight to Australia.
DAY 15: ARRIVE AUSTRALIA
Arrive home today.
